What is Knowledge Management?
Knowledge management is essentially about efficiency and protection.
It allows you to capture the experience and knowledge possessed by
your employees (often described a “tacit knowledge”) and so create
a centralised reference library that other employees can use.
This improves efficiency by allowing anyone to access the knowledge at any time,
and protect you from losing that information should any employee stop working for you.
Remember, much of the experience possessed by your staff was only gained because they
work for you. You shouldn’t lose it because someone is not there.
What is Chunks?
Chunks is a simple-to-use software package that allows you to
create the reference library of knowledge.
Chunks was originally developed for use in-house by our support department to build up a
support database. When developing Chunks, we knew that the package had to allow searches
to be carried out and be easy-to-use so that problems could be solved quickly and
efficiently and we use it every day. It allows our staff to quickly access the
experience of other employees and so improve the support service we provide and reduce
the training time for new support employees. We also use it to store other information
on procedures, IT issues and other software packages.
Chunks can also be used as an electronic notepad; for instance rather than printing
pages from pages on the internet, we can paste the information into Chunks, without
having to store it in folders or piles of paper!
